Bennetto teacher’s canoe carry for cancer

Already this fall, thousands have walked and run in Terry Fox’s name. But one Hamilton teacher is carrying on the cause with some extra weight.
Bennetto Elementary teacher Scott Miller’s been a lifelong canoe-tripper and wanted to challenge himself at the school’s run and walk today. He led an excited group of youngsters cheering him on.
Miller has been touched by cancer loss. He says the canoe-carry is to show the students – some of whom face financial challenges – that you can overcome obstacles.
“I thought, well if I could show them that I could do something that’s memorable not remarkable because people carry canoes all the time, but it’s memorable maybe they could realize they could overcome their challenges as well.”
“For me it’s a symbol of the school and what the students in the school and community face all the time.”
Miller says the school has already raised $600 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
