Beginning of the end for Wheat Board

It may be the end of the road for the Canadian Wheat Board’s monopoly on wheat and barley sales in the west.

The federal government has tabled its long-promised bill to end the monopoly.

It says western farmers will soon have the same right to choose where to sell their grain as farmers elsewhere.

But opponents say the end of the monopoly will hurt western farmers, because the board can’t compete on the open market without the guaranteed grain supply that comes with it.
