The St. Catharines fire department says no one was injured during a structure fire on Louth Street shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night.

The fire chief tells CHCH News that the resident was home. They stepped outside to have a cigarette for about seven minutes when their alarm went off. They report seeing heavy smoke coming from the basement and soon called 911.

Upon arrival, crews quickly extinguished the fire, which had consumed the basement. It originated in one room, but the source of ignition couldn’t be identified.

Nobody was injured, but damage is estimated to be $200,000.
