Argentina beat France 4-2 in a penalty shootout during the World Cup final on Sunday to claim their third FIFA World Cup title.

Europe’s run of four straight World Cup winners dating to 2006 came to an end in Qatar, despite Kylian Mbappe scoring the first hat trick in a final in 56 years.

Hundreds of Argentinian fans were emotional watching Lionel Messi finally win the biggest prize in soccer.

Gonzalo Montiel scored the penalty to bring Argentina to the win.

The match finished 3-3 through extra time with Messi scoring twice and converting his penalty in the shootout.

At 35, speculations arose that this is likely Messi’s last appearance in soccer’s biggest tournament but reports say he confirmed after the match that he intends to play on.

Messi is described as one of soccer’s greatest ever players alongside Pele and Diego Maradona.
