Appeal granted in SISO fraud sentencing

CHCH News has learned that the crown has been granted an appeal on the sentencing of former SISO executives Morteza Jafarpour and Robert Salama.

An RCMP spokesperson said he was thrilled the appeal was granted because “people need to be held accountable in a consistent manner with other cases.” He said there was an error in law in the SISO sentence because precedents for fraud cases like this one have already been set by the courts.

Last month Jafarpour was sentenced to two years in jail and Salama was sentenced to 18 months for defrauding the federal government out of millions of dollars when they ran Hamilton’s Settlement and Integration Services Organization. SISO went bankrupt in 2011. No date has been set for the appeal.
