Americans express fear and uncertainty over Trump’s second term
The news of Donald Trump’s sweeping election victory in the U.S. is still sinking in today, and in some cases, the reaction is alarming.
Prime Minister Trudeau, along with Premier Doug Ford, has expressed hope that they will be able to work with Trump’s new administration.
However, along the Niagara border today, Americans visiting Canada told CHCH they are afraid of what’s to come over the next four years.
The Americans we spoke to today fall into two groups. Some didn’t want to go on camera, indicating they didn’t want to be seen on TV speaking out for or against Trump. Others said they are now living in fear.
The Prime Minister is hoping for a strong Canada-U.S. partnership.
“We know that President Trump has made very clear his emphasis on supporting American jobs and moving forward in ways that will benefit people in his country. And we know there’s a way to make sure that is done in partnership with Canada, which will benefit people on both sides of the border,” Trudeau said.
The Premier also stressed that Americans cannot afford to endanger their reliance on Canadian trade.
“We’re the number-one trading partner for 17 states, and number two for 11 others. We have something they’ll always want, and that’s our critical minerals and our energy,” Ford said.
There is also concern about a potential Trump crackdown on illegal immigration along the Mexican border and the impact this could have on Canada.
