All-terrain wheelchairs roll out at Hamilton community garden

A community garden in Hamilton just became a lot more accessible.
Heather Govender, Education Program Manager at Green Venture says the organization is working to make its spaces easier to access through all-terrain wheelchairs.
“Sometimes a teacher would call to ask about the site and their class would decide not to come because they have a child in the class who has a wheelchair or has reduced mobility,” she said.
These wheelchairs can be accessed by anyone who experiences medical issues, and are not limited to those who require wheelchairs on a daily basis.
Occupational therapist Cheryl Hendry assists Green Venture in their accessibility goals, and says while these all-terrain chairs offer stability through forests and uneven surfaces, there are safety concerns.
“It’s a step in the right direction for traversing uneven terrain but elevations would remain a challenge,” she said.
Green Venture is working on these challenges and says renovations are in the works for their Ecohouse location.
