A well-known Palestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed while covering an Israeli military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday.
The Palestinian health ministry says she was shot in the head. Akleh’s producer, Ali Al-Samoudi, was also shot and is in stable condition.
According to Al Jazeera, Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest and was standing with other journalists when she was shot.
The media company says Al-Samoudi and other journalists at the scene said there were no Palestinian fighters present when the journalists were shot, while Israel says there was evidence the two journalists were hit by Palestinian gunfire.
Abu Akleh, 51, was born in Jerusalem. She started working for Al Jazeera in 1997.
An official funeral will be held for her on Thursday morning at the Palestinian presidency headquarters in Ramallah.
