AI data centres: why a land severance ignited a massive Hamilton protest

A massive protest just rocked Hamilton City Hall over a proposed AI data centre. And even though the city blocked the land severance application, the fight isn’t over.

So why did this proposal cause such a negative reaction?

To start, a Toronto-based company called Slate Asset Management owns 800 acres of land along Hamilton’s industrial waterfront near Stelco.

Slate has plans to launch their project ‘Steelport’ which is described as a world-class AI, advanced manufacturing, and clean infrastructure district.

And at the heart of it – an AI data centre.
