Adult Beginners is a dramatic-comedy based on a story by the film’s star Nick Kroll, directed by Ross Katz. The film was purchased for distribution after its premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, and Joel McHale also star alongside Kroll.
A young, hipster entrepreneur (Nick Kroll) crashes and burns on the eve of his company’s big launch. With his entire life in disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister (Rose Byrne), brother-in-law (Bobby Cannavale) and three year-old nephew in the suburbs — only to become their manny. Faced with real responsibility, he may finally have to grow up — but not without some bad behavior first.
In an interview with NOW Magazine, Kroll talked about how he relates to his character in the film. “I have 12 nieces and nephews and I barely ever get asked to babysit. Maybe once. I’m the godparent to none of them. So that was sort of the original idea: what if a brother like myself – sort of a selfish younger brother – was thrust into the role of becoming the major caretaker for a child?” Kroll, who has just wrapped the third and final season of his Comedy Central hit Kroll Show, will soon be seen in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups.
Adult Beginners is rated 14A.
