A group of activists in Hamilton is fighting the deportation of a man who moved to the city from Zimbabwe.
21-year old Farai Chigogora moved to Hamilton with his mother and brother in 2008. Three years ago he plead guilty to robbery, and served 15-months in prison. And he was told he’d be deported once he was released. Chigogora is scheduled to return to Zimbabwe on January 13th but is working with a lawyer to file a stay of removal. He says he’s staying positive, but knows he could be forced to leave his family in the near future: “I’m a positive person. I don’t think negatively. I always look and hope for the best. But at the same time, I’m also expecting the worst. I can’t plan what’s going to happen.”
Canada started deporting people to Zimbabwe last month, after more than a decade-long freeze due to unsafe conditions in the country.
