Haiden Suarez-Noa told a Hamilton jury he lost it moments before stabbing his girlfriend Tania Cowell to death in 2013. The 38-year old has been testifying in his own defense against second-degree murder charges.
We heard about his childhood growing up in Cuba. He was married there and has a couple of children with different mothers. He moved in 2009 to Canada to receive better opportunities, and in 2011 met Tania Cowell on the dating website Plenty of Fish.
Today on the stand we have been hearing more about how their relationship developed from there. According to Suarez, they had a lot of problems and argued a lot. He seemed to be surprised when she got pregnant.
Their arguments continued for much of Cowell’s difficult pregnancy. She was sick for a lot of it. They didn’t see each other: he was living in Guelph, working at Linamar’s manufacturing facility; she was living in her apartment in Stoney Creek.
Eventually he started paying her bills when she went on bed rest for her pregnancy, and then moved in with him after the baby was born in September 2012. But problems started again: about a month later they were arguing and he is painting Cowell to be sort of an irrational person.
Suarez says that these arguments came from nowhere, that they would start again four days after he thought they were resolved; he said she would have a particular way of cleaning things and would freak out if he did it a different way.
We are hearing more about those arguments. He is trying to paint himself as a supportive partner, a good father, and a rational, reasonable person. This is what the jury has been hearing.
We still haven’t heard why five months after the baby was born that Tania was stabbed 11 times; four of them fatal blows with a kitchen knife. We know Haiden Suarez-Noa was responsible and we don’t know why this happened.
We expect to hear that while on the stand and he will continue this afternoon.
