Accessible beach in Port Dover

Port Dover unrolled its newest addition to the beach front. A L-shaped plastic mat allows those confined to wheelchairs to get up close and personal to the water. This is the county’s latest step in making the beach front inclusive and accessible for all.
Peter Knechtel who owns the Beach House restaurant, came up with the idea to bring a mobility mat to Port Dover and says his late father inspired him.
“My dad’s health declined later in the years. He had to use canes and walkers and he was always a beach guy and he felt bad he could never go down to the beach again.”
The mat is part of the nearly $26 000 Federally funded project to make the beach front more accessible. The county also installed a number of accessible parking spots and revamped the beach front sidewalks.
