A Walk in the Woods is a comedy based on Bill Bryson’s bestselling memoir, directed by Ken Kwapis (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). The film premiered at Sundance this year and stars Sundance founder Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Kristen Schaal, Nick Offerman, Mary Steenburgen, and Emma Thompson.

Celebrated travel writer Bill Bryson (Academy Award® winner Robert Redford) challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine – instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson) and their large and happy family. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek—his long-lost and former friend, Stephen Katz (Academy Award® nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer.

Redford’s first encounter with the book was a bit of a fluke. “There was this book sitting on my desk that had sat there for some while. It had a picture of a bear in a forest, so my first thought was that this was another one of those environmental books I get sent. So I was on my way out and I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll take this along.’ So I read it, and it was the first time I could remember laughing out loud so many times while reading a book. That spurred me to try to get the rights, because I could see it as a film that would be for Paul Newman and me—that’s how it started.”

A Walk in the Woods is rated 14A.
