Getting the call to play for Team Canada is one thing, but for My Custom Sports Chair in Stoney Creek, a call from Team Canada has elevated their business to the world stage.

Three guys who grew up playing hockey together quit their jobs to start a chair business in their hometown of Stoney Creek, Ont. Now they can add Olympic Village to their resume.

Twin brothers, Mike and Matt Ruberto, are part of the ownership team, and one day their phone rang: it was Hockey Canada with an Olympic-sized request.

“I hope they bring all the luck in the world,” said Mike.

They have a working relationship with Hockey Canada and other professional sports teams to use their logos and create these chairs, but have never received a request this big.

It started in their garage over 10 years ago, and now they’re getting calls from Hockey Canada to have their product right in Olympic Village.

“We like to say we put a little extra luck in those chairs before they left for Milan,” said Mark.

Matt, Mike, and their teammate Ricky Walton have known each other for years and grew up playing hockey in Hamilton. They moved on to Junior and Division 1 in the United States, and now play for the Stoney Creek Tigers in the Allan Cup Hockey League. This 40-year friendship has now reached Olympic status.

“We jumped at the opportunity – we thought it was such a cool opportunity to be able to have these athletes not only see the chairs but utilize them in the village on their downtime.”

“A player on our team, his wife is Renata Fast on the team. And yeah, they love them. They said they’re great and just excited to be over there.”

We’ll just have to see if they have the golden edge as Canada’s men’s and women’s hockey teams look to medal at the Olympic Games in Milan.
