A look at what’s open and closed on New Years in Hamilton, surrounding areas

With New Year’s Day on Thursday, here’s a look at what’s open and closed around Hamilton, Halton and Niagara.

New Years Eve

Transit

Metrolinx has modified Go train and bus service between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1. Routes will not run as frequently, details can be found on their website.

City buses will run on a regular schedule in Hamilton, with free service after 6 p.m. MyRide Waterdown and Trans-Cab will run from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Niagara Falls, Ont. city buses will run between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. WEGO will run until 11 p.m.

Buses in Welland, Ont. will operate between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

St. Catharines transit will be in operation between 10:45 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Go Transit is offering free service after 7 p.m.

New Years Day

Banks, government offices and post offices will be closed. As will LCBO and most Beer Stores.

Libraries, malls, restaurants, grocery stores, community centres and arenas are closed. However, it is always a good idea to call ahead and check.

What’s open

The Outlet Collection of Niagara will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Most movie theatres will be open. Gas stations will also be open.

Transit

Busses in Hamilton will operate on a Sunday schedule, meaning the 12 Wentworth and 42 Mohawk East will not run.

MyRide Waterdown and Trans-Cab will run from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.

The DARTS accessible transportation office will be closed. All subscription trips except dialysis will be canceled, according to the City of Hamilton. Reservations are required.

City transit in Niagara will not be available.

Oakville Transit will operate on a holiday schedule between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Transit in Burlington will run on a Sunday/holiday schedule between 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Milton Transit will not be running.

Go trains and buses will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Garbage

Garbage will not be collected in Hamilton on Thursday, but instead will be postponed by one day.

Community recycling centres will be closed.

There will be no garbage collection in Niagara on Jan. 1, it will be postponed by one day.

There will be no waste collection in Halton on New Years Day. The region’s website can help you figure out when your garbage will be collected based on your address.

The Halton Waste Management Site will also be closed.
