450 vehicles stopped during Niagara police Festive RIDE campaign

Niagara police say 450 vehicles were stopped during their 2019 Festive RIDE campaign over the weekend.

Officers were at two locations in Welland and St. Catharines conducting sobriety checkpoints on Saturday.

Police say 21 drivers were asked to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, including several random, mandatory screening tests.

“Of all the drivers who provided samples, 2 of the drivers were arrested for having a Blood Alcohol Concentration exceeding 80 MG of alcohol or more in their blood,” said police in a news release. “Additionally, three of the drivers provided a sample in the warning range and subsequently had their licences suspended for 3 days.”

Six other drivers received tickets for various provincial offences.

Officers will be out in full force over the holidays looking for impaired drivers.

Police are reminding residents to drink responsibly and have a plan to arrive home safely. “Consider having a designated driver, call a taxi or use public transit,” said police. “The Niagara Regional Police has continued to conduct R.I.D.E. checks each week in December and throughout the holiday season.”
