It was a big night for Canadian Film and Television this past weekend as the 2nd annual Canadian Screen Awards were handed out at the Sony Centre in Toronto. The big winner of the evening was Enemy, which took home 5 awards. Quebec director Denis Villeneuve won in the Achievement in Direction category for creating the psychological thriller, his second collaboration with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, about a university lecturer with an unhealthy obsession of his movie extra look-alike. Actress Sarah Gadon won for her supporting role as Helen, the pregnant wife of the movie extra Jake. Enemy also won for cinematography, editing, and musical score.
The Best Motion Picture award went to Gabrielle, continuing the trend of Canadian Oscar submissions winning top prize (War Witch, Monsieur Lazhar, and Incendies all won in the last three years). In one of the most heartwarming moments of the night, the film’s star, Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, took home the Best Actress award for her portrayal of a young woman with William’s syndrome fighting for her sexual and romantic independence. Marion-Rivard lives with the disorder, but that didn’t prevent her from delivering a powerful performance and a cheerful acceptance speech.
Viggo Mortensen presented Toronto native David Cronenberg with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the two having previously worked together in A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and A Dangerous Method. Cronenberg’s next project is called Maps to the Stars, about a Hollywood psychiatrist and his oddball family.
