A 28-year-old man is facing multiple charges after officers found 20 handguns inside a vehicle attempting to cross the border in Niagara Falls.
The Canada Border Service Agency says a vehicle was crossing the border at the Rainbow Bridge on Oct. 16 when it was pulled over for a secondary inspection. CBSA found the undeclared handguns inside an after-market compartment inside the vehicle.
Marquise Tariff Watkins, of Niagara Falls, New York, was arrested by Niagara police and charged with willful evasion, false statements and attempt to smuggle.
Watkins is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
“This seizure and arrest demonstrate the ongoing commitment of the Canada Border Services Agency to prevent firearms from illegally entering Canada at the border. I am proud of CBSA’s intelligence officers, investigators and border services officers who work diligently to stop the smuggling of firearms into our communities. Strong collaborative partnerships between the CBSA and its domestic and international partners are essential to ensuring the safety of Canadians,” said regional director general of Southern Ontario Rick Comerford in a news release.
The investigation is ongoing.
