Twenty-seven-year-old Ayanle Hassan Ali will remain in jail, at least through the weekend, after a court appearance earlier today.

He was remanded in custody today until next Thursday, while his lawyer scrambles to find potential bail sureties.

Ali said nothing as he appeared briefly in court dressed in a white t-shirt today. This was his second court appearance. He faces nine charges, including three counts of attempted murder. Police said a man holding a knife walked into a government building Monday and attacked two soldiers. They were both treated in hospital then released. Police say Ali said that Allah told him to do it. Ali’s lawyer David Burke said outside court that it will be a very difficult bail. He also said it was too early to discuss his client’s state of mind.

An ongoing police investigation involves anti-terrorism officers from the RCMP and other security agencies, but so far, what sparked the stabbing remains unclear. Ali will appear again in court March 24th.
