Canadian women who want to get pregnant are being warned to put it off for a couple of months if they have just come back from an area where the Zika virus is prevalent.
The virus has been found in mosquitoes in at least 32 countries, including, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, and Brazil. The Public Health Agency of Canada is also telling men they should use condos for a couple of months if they have returned to Canada from a Zika hotspot. In Brazil the mosquito-borne virus has been potentially linked to thousands of cases of newborns with abnormally small heads.
It’s believed the mothers may have been infected during pregnancy. And in a small number of cases, infected males have sexually transmitted the virus to their female partners. A number Canadians and Americans who travelled to the endemic areas have been diagnosed with Zika after returning home.
