The Ontario Nurses Association says patients are going to pay the price for job cuts at St. Joseph’s Health Care in Hamilton. The hospitals have a $26 shortfall, and plan to eliminate 136 staff positions. The cuts will be made in several areas, including mental health care, day surgery, and dialysis. St. Joe’s says it hopes the actual number of jobs lost will be closer to 30 or 40, through early retirement. It won’t know the final number until the middle of the year.

The head of the nurse’s association expects more than 60 registered nursing jobs will be lost, replaced by fewer registered practical nurses who have more training.
