About 400 people had to find another place to sleep last night after a flood to the lower six floors of the building resulted in an evacuation. Some went to stay with friends and family, more than 80 others were given emergency shelter at Bennetto Community Center in Hamilton.

The flood happened early yesterday at a building on Rebecca Street between Wellington and Cathcart. A standpipe burst on the 6th floor, sending water through corridors and walls. Power for the entire building had to be turned off, leaving nearly 170 apartment units with no electricity or heat.

Power has since been restored to the building, there is still come issues with the elevator. Repairs are estimated in the tens of thousands.
