Shock and horror in Eastern Libya, where more than 5,300 people are feared dead in the city of Derna – one of the hardest hit in the region.

Earlier estimates had put the death toll lower, but with 10,000 reported missing, officials had warned it would rise and expect it to climb even more.

It’s the latest blow to a country that has been gutted by years of civil war and strife – the nation is still divided into two rival governments, and that has complicated the response.
