Alghabra toured Stubbe’s Cement Cargo Facility at the Port Weller Dry Docks on the Welland Canal. Local MPs Chris Bittle and Vance Badawey joined representatives from Stubbe’s and Heddle shipyards which operate the dry dock to make the funding announcement. They say the money will strengthen Canada’s supply chain and bring economic benefits to Niagara.

“We’re excited to see an excellent company like Heddle and Stubbe’s take over this facility and bring the jobs, bring the economic activity, improve the supply chain,” Bittle said.

Badawey added, “Strengthening our international trade performance, right here from Niagara. It’s a big deal for the country, not just the Niagara Region but for the entire country.”

The money will be used to improve areas in the port used for moving cargo like cement, as well as develop about 11 acres of land that currently isn’t being used.

Alghabra said, “This investment will increase the capacity of this trade corridor and help deliver popular products like cement to the market more quickly.”

The funding is coming from Ottawa’s National Trade Corridors Fund which is used to invest in critical transportation assets.
