Black or White is a family drama written and directed by Mike Binder (Reign Over Me, Man About Town). The film, which premiered at TIFF last year, stars Kevin Costner, Octavia Spencer, Jillian Estell, Bill Burr, Jennifer Ehle, Andre Holland, Gillian Jacobs, and Anthony Mackie.

Black or White is the story of a grandfather (Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When her paternal grandmother (Academy Award® winner Octavia Spencer) seeks custody with the help of her brother (Anthony Mackie), the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and inspired by actual events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

Binder knows there is a racial divide in America right now and hopes that his script, inspired by his own experiences, will be a voice in a larger conversation on the issue. “I wanted to play out (my) scenario and make a movie that may spark a conversation about how we move forward with regard to race relations in this country, while at the same time allowing audiences an honest look inside two vastly different families as they are united by their shared love and concern for the child that binds them together- because at its core, Black or White is truly about family.”

Black or White is rated PG.
