U.S. Steel talks come to an end

Talks between U.S. Steel and the union at its Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke hit an impasse just before their contract ran out at midnight Monday.

Local 8782 of the United Steelworkers hopes to get members together Wednesday to update them on what’s happened, since they voted almost unanimously for a strike mandate. But for now, it’s business as usual at the plant. Both sides have agreed to give 72 hours notice of a strike or lockout. In 2010, workers were locked out for 8 months, before agreeing to most of U.S. Steel’s terms in their last contract.
