Boxing day shopping

Shoppers were on the lookout for Boxing Day bargains today, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year but most people we spoke to were in good spirits despite the crowds.

Aside from groceries, electronics and clothing top the list of what buyers will purchase. Marvin Ryder from the DeGroote School of Business says it’s an important day for retailers.

“Today we think Canadians will spend between $500 and $600 million just this day alone. To put that into perspective, that’s about $5000 per second as the day goes by.”

Economists say there was a surge in people buying gift cards this year, which Ryder says was the number one gift people received.

“Retailers are happy to have you come back and buy more stuff of course, what they love about it is you can never buy the exact amount on the gift card so you always spend a little more and that helps their bottom line,”

CF Lime Ridge says they expect about 90 000 people to pass thru their doors today.
