Eisenberger gets schooled

Grade 11 Civics students at Sir Allan Macnab Secondary School on the mountain got to hear from Hamilton’s mayor himself over how the city dealt with the anarchist vandalism on Locke and why it retracted it’s call for the anarchy symbol to be treated as one of hate.

Alice Smith is a civics teacher at Sir Allen Macnab Secondary School. Her classes are off-the-cuff and cover all political views.

The Tower is an anarchist group in Hamilton. It’s website says it hosts social events and political conversations. Recently, some of it’s members have been arrested in relation to march’s vandalism on Locke Street.

Smith, who doesn’t condone the violence, used the crime spree as a spring board to teach her students about what anarchy really is.

When the city decided to label the anarchist symbol as one of hate, two months after the incident, Smith had a problem.

The city retracted the order days later, but the mayor decided to talk to students anyways.

In the end, everyone agreed that the symbol, like many others in history, has been misrepresented by a select few.

On top of the topic of anarchy, the students and Mayor Eisenberger talked municipal politics in general along with the recent tariffs imposed by the US. The mayor said every time he chats with youth he always leaves with a new sense of optimism.
