Careless smoking led to two Hamilton homes catching fire on Rosslyn Avenue between Dunsmure Road and Roxborough Avenue this morning.
The fire started just before 7:00 a.m. When Hamilton Fire arrived the blaze had already spread to the second and third floor of the residence, and the second floor of the neighboring house. Crews immediately updated the alarm and performed an aggressive interior attack to both houses.
All residents of the two homes responded to their fire alarms and were able to evacuate. One person received smoke inhalation and was sent to hospital for treatment but they are expected to recover safely.
Hamilton Fire Platoon Chief Enio Dinardo says the total damage to the two houses is expected around $550,000. He says to use a steel can when smoking outside.
