Hamilton police are investigating the city’s third homicide of the year.

On Sunday, August 7, police received information that a number of emails had been sent to a variety of media outlets with information related to a deceased person.

Officers attended a residence at 175 Catherine Street South and found a man in his 60’s dead. The man had injuries consistent with foul play and the case was deemed a homicide.

Police say a positive identification of the man has not been made due to the level of decomposition. Investigators say they have been in contact with family members related to the apartment’s occupant and they are aware of the investigation.

An autopsy will be performed in the coming days, as well as steps to identify the man.

Police have arrested and charged 41-year-old Jonathan Lewis with 2nd degree murder. They are not seeking additional suspects and believe this was an isolated incident. Police also say their is reason to believe mental health was a factor, but say that is still under investigation.

There will be a continued police presence in the area of 175 Catherine Street South for the next couple of days while investigators process the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
