Starting on Oct. 26 anyone six months of age and older who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario can get a free flu vaccine.

Flu shots will be available at participating pharmacies, public health units and participating doctor and nurse practitioner offices.

It is recommended to call ahead to confirm if vaccines are available. Pharmacies do not administer flu shots to children two years and under.

The Government of Ontario recommends that the following individuals/groups of individuals get a flu shot:

– community care providers and health-care workers

– household contacts of high-risk individuals

– members of households expecting a newborn during influenza season

– women who are breastfeeding.

Children under six months, anyone who has had an anaphylactic allergic reaction to the flu shot in the past and anyone ill or with a fever or infection should not receive a flu shot.

Health Canada says it generally takes two weeks for the flu vaccine to fully work.

Its effectiveness can depend on a number of variables, includes one’s overall health, age and how well the current flu vaccine matches this year’s strain of the flu.
