Over 2,200 traffic charges laid in Halton back-to-school enforcement

Halton police says they laid 2,274 charges and issued 536 warnings from Sept. 7 to 18 in an initiative to reinforce safe driving during the back-to-school season.

Through its 19th annual Project Safe Start campaign, officers increased enforcement to ensure any traffic and road safety concerns were responded to in a timely and effective manner.

Police say they dedicated over 3,350 hours to it, with disobeying stop signs and speeding being the top common offences.

“The results of Project Safe Start demonstrate the impact proactive traffic enforcement has on road safety,” Police Chief Stephen Tanner said.

“I would be happier if our officers did not encounter drivers committing infractions, however as enforcement figures would suggest, concerns remain surrounding unsafe driving practices in and around our school zones.”

Residents are reminded to report any driving violations as well as to call 911 in an emergency.
