What we know so far about the hate-motivated Belleville synagogue shooting

VIDEO: Belleville police say the synagogue shooting that left one officer in hospital was a hate-motivated attack.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Const. Jeff Smith was stationed near the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville on Sept. 20, the evening of Yom Kippur.

While on duty he encountered an individual armed with a shotgun before an exchange of gunfire.

Smith and the shooter were both injured in the exchange and taken to hospital.

Ward died of his injuries the next day.

At the time, Const. Smith was in critical but stable condition.

During a news conference Thursday, Belleville police Chief Murray Rodd said he is now recovering, but has a long road ahead.
