Unattended candle suspected cause of St. Catharines house fire

An unattended candle is believed to be the cause of a house fire in St. Catharines that has displaced seven people and a number of pets.

Calls came in shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday for a home on Pelham Road near Cummings Street.

Several firefighters and trucks responded to the blaze and police helped to block the road.

St. Catharines fire department says that one person was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

The department’s platoon chief says the Red Cross has assisted the affected individuals with temporary accommodations.

Reports indicate that the fire was discovered in the basement.

Damage estimates are in the range of $25,000.
