OPP reports 254 road deaths this year, including 38 motorcyclists

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say 254 people died this year in motor vehicle collisions investigated by the OPP, with 38 of those deaths being motorcyclists.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a good percentage of those motorcyclists were driving properly at the crash, indicating that it was the other motorists that contributed to the collision and the rider’s death.

“Excessive speed, loss of control are some of the primary factors and considerations of when we investigate these motorcycle fatalities,” said Schmidt.

“The OPP have been called to about 46,000 collisions that we have investigated this year. About 5,000 of them were personal injury crashes.”

As the final long weekend of the summer soon approaches, Schmidt is cautioning people to pay attention to the road and what’s happening around them.
