Extreme, prolonged heat wave forecast to smother Ontario

The heat and humidity is on in Ontario, causing Environment Canada to issue orange and yellow weather warnings across the province.

The weather agency says the temperatures will rise today and continue until Friday and possibly into the weekend.

The hottest days are expected to be Wednesday and Thursday, with maximum temperatures of 34 to 37 degrees Celsius expected.

Hot and humid air can negatively affect the air quality health index, approaching the high-risk category.

Environment Canada recommends that people hydrate regularly and limit outdoor activity and direct exposure to the sun and heat. Anyone who must be outside for work should wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light coloured clothing and take regular breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.

The city of Hamilton has a webpage dedicated to heat warnings and heat-related illness, including “cool places” to go during all stages of a heat event.

The County of Brant offers designated cooling centres to help residents stay safe and comfortable during extreme weather conditions.

Halton Region also lists heat warning and cooling centre information on dedicated webpages.

The city of Niagara Falls’ website lists hot weather relief information and indoor and outdoor cooling centre information.
