Trump threatens tariffs again, this time on Canadian-made aircraft

U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening Canada with more tariffs, this time taking aim at Canadian-made aircraft.

Singling out Bombardier, Trump’s new threat is to decertify and tariff these Canadian aircraft – marking the latest escalation of trade tensions between the North American nations.

Taking to social media, the U.S. president alleged that “Canada has wrongfully, illegally and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700 and 800 Jets.”

He continues that the U.S. is “decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada.” Trump adds that this will be the case until Gulfstreams are fully certified.

As part of the threat, Trump says a 50 per cent tariff will be put on all Canadian aircraft sold in the U.S. if the situation is not corrected immediately.

Certification is usually a multi-year process overseen by regulators, with authorities often working together across borders to assess applications.
