Canada Post reaches deal in principle with union, suspending strikes

Canada Post and the union representing thousands of mail carriers across Canada said Friday evening they have reached agreements in principle.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says rotating strike action has been suspended, while both parties work out the language in the new contracts.

This follows after two years of bargaining, where the union pursued better wages and job security and Canada Post proposed new changes to services to improve its finances.

The Crown corporation this week reported its largest quarterly loss in the company’s history, citing a third quarter loss before tax of $541 million.

CUPW said in a statement that upon signing the agreements, the union agrees to pause its strike action, and Canada Post will agree to suspend its right to lockout.

Canada Post told CHCH News in a statement that as the two parties work to finalize the tentative agreements, they will not make any comment on the details of any potential contract.
