Man dead following basement fire in St. Catharines home

A man has died following an early morning basement fire in St. Catharines, as firefighters and crews did all they could to try and save his life.

Investigators from the St. Catharines fire department and the Office of the Fire Marshal are looking into the cause of the fire.

Shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday fire crews responded to a report of a blaze at 83 Jacobson Ave., with a victim inside. The department says that the fire started in a bedroom.

Crews rescued the victim and the person was transferred to a hospital. Their status is currently unknown.

Two other people were removed from the main floor with minor injuries and refused treatment.
