Niagara College cancels fall convocation ceremonies as support staff strike enters third week

After months of lecture, assignments and exams, Niagara College confirms it plans to cancel fall convocation ceremonies slated for later this month due to the ongoing Ontario college support staff strike.

A statement from the college says the ceremonies — originally scheduled for Oct. 23 to 24 — is the result of months of work and planning by teams of employees, including support staff, and it cannot meet the expected high standard of convocation ceremonies.

A college spokesperson says graduating students were notified last week and new dates for in-person ceremonies will be announced in the coming weeks.

Around 10,000 support staff at colleges across Ontario, including in the Hamilton area, hit the picket lines on September 11.
