Hamilton police say a 27-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a charge laid in connection with the sexual assault of an elderly woman last year.

During the overnight hours of May 9, 2024, officers say Nelson Melo broke into a home located within the gated community of Twenty Place on Twenty Road West near Upper James Street.

Investigators say Melo sexually assaulted a woman in her 80s who was living alone. He then fled the scene.

Police could not comment on the nature of her injuries at the time, but did say she “sustained significant stress from the attack.”

Melo was arrested a few weeks after the sexual assault. In an update Tuesday, officers say he pleaded guilty to the charge of break and enter commit – sexual assault.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 4.
