Burlington man sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder of his wife

Burlington man Sandor Somogyi, 70, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 13.5 years after he was found guilty of the second-degree murder of his wife, Margit Somogyi.

This is the first time Halton police have also identified the victim in this case.

Margit was found diseased in her apartment by officers on Jan. 13, 2023 after Halton police received reports of an unconscious woman in an apartment building in Burlington.

The 70-year-old man was originally charged with first-degree murder when he was arrested the same day of the murder.

On April 29, 2025, a jury found Sandor Somogyi guilty of second-degree murder.
