Salami-related salmonella reports jump to 72 across Canada, public health warns

Public Health Canada is reminding consumers of a recall notice for three types of salami after 72 people have reported contracting salmonella-related symptoms after eating.

Health officials are warning the public not to eat, use, sell or distribute the following:

• Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet (Lots 5035 226 and 5049 226)
• Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot (Lots 5020 228 and 5035 228)
• Bona brand Mild Genova Salami (Lot 5035 226)

Of the 72 reports of salmonella poisoning, 14 were in Ontario, 57 in Alberta and one in Manitoba. Seven people were hospitalized.

Salmonellosis has a wide range of symptoms. Some people may not get sick at all, but if you do contract symptoms they usually begin within 6 to 72 hours after exposure.

Those affected may experience chills, fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps or a sudden headache.

Most symptoms resolve within four to seven days.
