Hamilton elementary teacher charged with several counts of sexual assault

Hamilton police have arrested and charged a man who was working at a local elementary school as a teacher when he allegedly assaulted several victims.
Police began their investigation in April after several individuals came forward to report “an incident of sexual assault” at Rockton Public Elementary School on Highway 8 near Flamborough. The age and gender of the victims was not released by the authorities.
Ryan Barrett, 44, of Hamilton was arrested and charged yesterday with three counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference.
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) told CHCH News in a statement that they are aware of Barrett’s recent arrest and that they are taking the allegations very seriously, as well as fully cooperating with Hamilton police during the investigation.
The school board said Barrett was immediately placed on administrative leave once they became aware of the allegations.
They say steps were taken to prevent Barrett from continuing to teach in any HWDSB schools, at least until the matter is resolved through the judicial system.
Anyone with information that could assist the police in the investigation is asked to contact Detective Mike Dunham at 905-546-4847.
Victims of sexual assault can report incidents by contacting Hamilton police’s Sexual Assault Unit non-emergency line at 905-540-5553, or by filing a report online www.hamiltonpolice.on.ca.
