You can call it “a guy thing ” if you want to — but doctors will tell you that men, in general, are not terribly good at taking care of their own health needs. To change that situation — a high profile group of athletes coaches and professionals, have rolled out a new, on-line program to focus on men’s health.

One surprise is that 70% of the major health issues faced by men are lifestyle issues — that could probably be fixed, with a minimum of effort.

And that’s kind of the idea behind ‘dontchangemuch.ca’ — a website devoted both to men’s health, and the belief that just a little bit of effort, can make a big difference. The national campaign kicked off in Ottawa Tuesday, with a somewhat humorous ad campaign.

As mentioned some big names have agreed to be the face of the organization. New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault, Grey Cup champion Shea Emry, former NHL star Trevor Linden — and gold medalist Simon Whitfield — who spoke earlier And Dr. Ninh Tran of the Hamilton Public Health unit offered some advice.

The foundation has deliberately decided to take a low-key, humorous approach to a very serious topic — because of the feedback they got from men, prior to launching the initiative. Men told them overwhelmingly, they didn’t want to be lectured or nagged about their health issues — but they were comfortable with a little bit of “guy-humour” to point them in the right direction. The website takes on everything from diabetes to erectile dysfunction and mental health.

They also have a web app “youcheck” — and a short ” health check tool ”  to evaluate your own current health. A week of events is planned leading up to Father’s Day — ” Men’s Health Week” — and they too, can be found on the website.
