Ford is issuing a recall affecting nearly 1.5 million Focus compact vehicles in North America.
The recall covers Ford Focuses from 2012 through 2018 model years with two-litre four-cylinder engines.
According to the automaker, a fuel system problem can cause the engines to stall without warning.
Dealers will reprogram the computer with new software, which should take care of the problem in most cases.
Ford says owners of affected vehicles should keep their gas tanks at least half full until repairs have been made.
The recall is expected to begin on Dec. 10.
