Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson mixes romance and action in his newest, Pompeii. Set in 79 AD, Game of Throne’s Kit Harington stars as Milo, a gladiator who falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Emily Browning’s Cassia. When Cassia is forced to marry a corrupt Roman Senator, Milo must escape the arena and the pair must flea Pompeii as Mount Vesuvius erupts and envelops the city in lava and ash. Pompeii co-stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica Lucas and Jared Harris. Looks like Anderson’s sticking with the stylized approach he’s known for in this one, and you can bet there’ll be some major action and violence.

A bit of a Canadian connection in this one: parts of the film were shot in Toronto and home-grown stars Carrie-Anne Moss and Kiefer Sutherland are featured.

Pompeii is rated PG.
