After 11 days of movie premieres, screening and star sightings, the Toronto International Film Festival wraps up today.
To mark the end of the festivities, TIFF has released its People’s Choice Awards.
The top award goes to Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave.” The film tells the true story of a free black man from upstate New York who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. The award comes with a $15,000 cash prize.
The People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award goes to Sion Sono’s “Why Don’t You Play in Hell.” The film follows two men who hate each other, but things get complicated when the one man falls for the other man’s daughter.
And the award for best documentary goes to Jehane Noujaim for “The Square.” The film tells the story behind the headlines in Egypt during the 2011 overthrow of 30-year dictator Hosni Mubarak.
