Ancaster Community Food Drive a success

It was a record-breaking year as more than 400 volunteers from the Hamilton area came together at St. John’s Anglican Church in Ancaster on Saturday to take part in the community food drive.

More than 82,000 lbs of food and $6,500 was raised at the annual Ancaster Community Food Drive for food agencies in the Hamilton area.

People of all ages and all walks of life came to pitch in, including a Diamond Jubilee recipient and Hamilton mayor Bob Bratina.

“Sometimes governments can’t do everything, sometimes governments are too slow to do things. So, here’s the response. People coming out with needs in mind and they’re going to make sure that people who require food, are going to get it,” said Bratina.

There’s a big need for food at many food banks, especially following the food drives that are so common during the Christmas season. Also, people using food banks is up 100 per cent.

Volunteers at Saturday’s event work quickly to stock the shelves at local food banks. The food was packaged up and is expected to be at Hamilton food agencies on Monday.
